Popularized by the Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike (东京都知事小池百合子) and known in English as the 3Cs, “sanmitsu” refers to three situations the government has encouraged people to avoid to prevent the transmission of Covid-19: Confined spaces, crowded places and close-contact settings.
Cambridge Dictionary has revealed its word of the year is “quarantine”.
Alongside “quarantine”, other coronavirus-related words, including “pandemic” and “lockdown”, ranked highly on Cambridge Dictionary’s most popular list for 2020.
For the first time, two US dictionary companies (Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com) on Monday declared the same word their word of the year: “pandemic”.
Pandemic “probably isn’t a big shock”, said Peter Sokolowski, editor at large for Merriam-Webster.
The Oxford English Dictionary has been unable to name its traditional word of the year for 2020, saying that 2020 is not a year that could neatly be accommodated in one single “word of the year”.
